Debra Johnson serves as the Director of Communications for the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF).
Debra joined DCYF in June 2018 with the mission to proficiently communicate with staff and key stakeholders about the policies that impact the lives of children and families. Debra began her career as the afternoon news reporter at WVON Radio in Chicago before she joined the Office of the Mayor in South Bend, Indiana as director of communications in 2012. She then served as director of communications to Illinois Congressman Bobby L. Rush from 2013 to 2017.
In 2009, Debra graduated from Saint Louis University where she earned a dual bachelor of arts degree in political science and communication. She has used her degree to pursue her passion for politics and journalism.
In her spare time, Debra teaches a women’s leadership course that promotes a positive self-image for young women.
