November 1 marks the beginning of Native American Heritage Month (NAHM), which is celebrated every year to honor and celebrate the culture, traditions, history, and contributions of American Indians and Alaska Natives. This celebration is an opportunity to educate ourselves and better understand the history of our nation and its people.
DCYF honors NAHM while also actively working on and fostering our current government-to-government relationship with Tribes in Washington state. Each year, DCYF attends the Centennial Accord meeting, where state agencies and Tribes across Washington come together to discuss our joint goals and expectations.
This year, DCYF was once again honored to attend and were witness to a historic moment when Governor Ferguson signed Executive Order 25-10, designed to strengthen how Washington consults and collaborates with Tribal Nations. This action marks a significant step forward in honoring and upholding Tribal sovereignty.
“Meeting and reconnecting with many tribal leaders, deeply listening to ways we can improve our relationships and interactions, and sharing mutual concerns for our people was a humbling experience,” explained Secretary Tana Senn.
The event was both powerful and inspiring, highlighting the incredible leadership and dedication of Washington’s Tribes. DCYF is deeply grateful for the opportunity to stand alongside Tribal leaders — to listen, learn, and continue building partnerships rooted in mutual respect and shared purpose.
