Trauma-Informed Care

What is Trauma-Informed Care?

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) explains trauma-informed care (TIC) using the “Four R’s”.

  • Realizes how common trauma is and how people can recover.
  • Recognizes signs of trauma in children, families, staff, and others.
  • Responds by using what we know about trauma in policies and daily practices.
  • Resists re-traumatization so people feel safe and supported.

Why is TIC Important?

Strong positive relationships between children and adults help children grow healthy brains. These relationships support children’s learning and social and emotional growth.
